LAI Plant Tour Details

Founded in 1979, $80 million LAI International, Inc. makes precision products for Aerospace & Defense, Energy, Medical, and Industrial applications.

Join the Manufacturing Leadership Council at the LAI International Northeast (NE) plant in Scarborough, ME (just outside of Portland), for an opportunity to tour the factory and see how LAI is implementing Mfg 4.0 as part of their Factory of the Future (FOF) initiative. During the tour you will have an opportunity to see how a middle market company has created FOF on mid volume production lines in both a single piece flow and batch processing. LAI's mantra of Accept, Make, and Pass on No Defect has driven its operations to be even more data driven and to embrace data collection/analysis in new ways then ever realized in the past.

The NE facility primarily runs two large scale programs through its plant: with the launch of its sheath program 4 years ago utilizing all new state of the art machine tools, NE has now replicated its single piece flow production lines 6 times within the facility all while driving CPKs higher than 1.33; 2) the second program, sectors, has been building product for 30+ years and has transitioned to dock to floor by passing all incoming inspections at its Customer's location, driven through data based continuous improvement initiatives. Both programs are in support of blue chip Customers and critical in meeting their production delivery programs in support of the Aerospace & Defense markets.

Attend this plant tour, which will be followed by an executive roundtable discussion on Building a Roadmap to Manufacturing 4.0 and walk away with actionable insights, including:

  • How a Factory of the Future (FOF) rollout can be integrated into the ERP system
  • How FOF goes beyond data collection into actionable real time analytics to drive decisions on the factory floor
  • How to drive a culture of Accept, Make, and Pass on No Defect while embracing technology fearlessly
  • How to drive implementation of FOF not from the top down but from the bottom up
  • How to build a business case to prioritize capital dollars in support of driving quality ahead of delivery

In an effort to provide a quick introduction to LAI, the attached video highlights some of the products made, processes followed, and continuous improvements launched. With the Factory of the Future (FOF) rollout that adopts many elements of Mfg 4.0, LAI has improved its operations beyond original expectations and has set the company up with significant growth programs. FOF enables all Associates to Accept, Make, and Pass on No Defect.
